To some parents – those whose children struggle with self-harm- the new year may or may not be the symbol of hope that society makes it out to be.
I have come to the conclusion that a lot of our mistakes and fears are about control.
One of the reasons why our children self harm is lack of control.
There are circumstances in their lives they have no control over and so they do something which they can control – they hurt themselves.
This in turn alarms parents, as we then find we cannot control their self-harming behavior. In this sense the ‘harm’ has triumphed, and we feel defeated as there is nothing we can do.
But, let us not lose hope because we don’t need to be in control if we accept that there is a greater power able and willing to help us – a God who is more than willing to heal our children and only wants the best for us.
Sometimes I think that God won’t treat me as well, with as much favor, as he does other people. But what causes this negative thinking?
Well part of the answer to this is that when we look at our circumstances instead of our God we draw incorrect conclusions.
The prophet Jeremiah once witnessed the absolute downfall of Jerusalem, taken captive by its enemies. He sees dreadful sights all around him. He speaks of himself captured in a besieged city, without anyone to hear his prayers, and as a target for the arrows of the enemy (3:7–8, 12). Yet even in this seemingly hopeless situation, he somehow found hope in the Lord (3:21–23).
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
You see, we don’t really have to wait for the world’s symbolic ‘New Year’ – since God’s mercies are available to us EVERY MORNING.
I love that Jesus gave us a new chance , and that new starts are available to us – and our children – every single moment of our lives.
Lost in despair at the brink of this New Year ?
Think about what you really want, what your dreams are.
Ask !We all want to see our children set free, but ask Him who knows all things to give you wisdom to guide your child correctly.
Share your dreams with Him and wait in the full knowledge that he loves you.

Let Go ….Ask him to show you if you have the need to control it all.
Surrender your needs to Jesus. ( see my post with this title ) Let God take control instead of you, it’s so much easier that way.
The next 2 verses of Lamentations are the best to live by …..have a blessed new year ..wait, hope, seek, surrender….
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
